A ligature in typography and writing is the combination of writing units to form a single glyph which is an element of writing that adds to the meaning of what is written.  Ligatures can be traced all the way back to Sumerian cuneiform, where characters were often combined to form single characters.  The way writing runs together in manuscripts helped contribute to the formation of ligatures throughout history.
