Secrets of the Rosetta Stone
I give this movie a 4 out of 5. The movie is about the discovery of the Rosetta Stone and peoples’ attempts at translating it. The film discusses how the stone was discovered by a group of Napoleon Bonaparte’s men during the annexation of Egypt. The men found the stone, and thought it might be significant. The stone was brought to Europe, and scholars throughout Europe attempted to translate the hieroglyphics on it. None of them were successful and after a while the Rosetta Stone was became less and less talked about. Then, a man named Jean Francois Champollion deciphered the hieroglyphics on the Rosetta Stone. He was able to match up the hieroglyphic symbols with the Greek version of the Egyptian name Ramses. Another man named Thomas Young was able to decipher more on the stone with the help of Champollion’s findings. Young would not give Champollion credit though, and there was a long lasting dispute between the two. Both men deserve credit for the progress that had been made on deciphering the Rosetta Stone. This movie explained in detail the history of deciphering the Rosetta Stone and provided a good picture of the events that surrounded it.
