Shepard Fairey is an American contemporary artist, graphic designer, and illustrator. He graduated from Idyllwild Arts Academy in 1988 and in 1992, he graduated from Rhode Island School of Design with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in illustration. Fairey is most well known for his ‘HOPE’ posters which supported Barack Obama’s 2008 candidacy for President of the United States. He is also well known for the ‘OBEY’ series of works. I, personally like his style and I think his designs are unique and attractive.
Here are two samples of poster design that were created by Shepard Fairey:
The principles of design that were utilized in the piece above were mainly balance and figure and ground. The piece is almost exactly symmetrical across the vertical axis and the ground is distinctly different than the figure.
The principles of design that were used in the design above were mainly repetition and balance. The American flag was placed around the design four times which gives the piece a feeling of repetitiveness. The flags are set to form a rectangle and each flag is the same size which, together, give the piece balance.
